This whiskey is made using a combination of malted and unmalted barley, which is triple distilled in copper pot stills. A D is one star and a D- one-half of a star.Redbreast 12-Year-Old Potstill Irish Whiskey is a premium whiskey produced by Irish Distillers, one of the largest and most respected producers of Irish whiskey. A C- is two stars.ĭ+ to D-: Below average whiskey. A B- is three stars.Ĭ+ to C-: Average whiskey. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. Five stars.Ī-: A fine bottle of whiskey, representing the top end of the conventional, premium range.ī and B-: Good and above average. Above five stars.Ī: An outstanding bottle of whiskey, but lacking that special something which makes for a true masterpiece. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. The Whiskey Reviewer uses a letter-based rating system, instead of the numerical 100-grade rating system. The official price on Redbreast 12 is now $66, and the online retailer average pegs the price at very, very near that: $67. Palate: Silky and smooth, red berries, buts, charred oak, leather, sherry, creamy, and mild spiciness.įinish: Long and spicy, lingering sherry, leather, and toasted wood. Nose: Rich fruitiness, red berries, sherry, nutty (almonds/cashews), creamy sweetness, floral, and toasted wood. As it is, I just plain like the stuff and would make it a staple if it were only a bit cheaper. I don’t rave about Redbreast 12 Year Old the way some people do, but I might have had I discovered it about five or six years earlier than I did. The finish is a long, mild one, despite the heft and full-bodied nature of the scent and taste, making this one of those Irish whiskeys that is perfect for summertime drinking. Not so much caramel as before, but plenty of spiciness stirred in to enhance the sweet side of the flavor. The palate is thick, smacking of floral citrus sweetness and nuttiness, leaning to marzipan and a touch of sherry-cum-dried fruits. Some of it was, but the majority comes from ex-sherry casks. The nose is fruity floral, creamy, and laden with cake spice and caramel, the latter so much so that you could be forgiven for thinking the spirit was aged primarily in ex-bourbon barrels. Out of the green glass bottle and into the glass, this 40% abv whiskey has a bright, rich gold coloring, like honey with just the slightest twist of copper in it. This plus the fact that it is the most widely and readily available expression of its kind make it th e single pot still whiskey. Redbreast took international whiskey circles by storm, winning high marks and many, many titles and gold medals. Prior to Redbreast, if one was one of the very few with an interest in pot still whiskey, the best that could be done was to buy a blend with a higher proportion of pot still, such as Powers or Irishman. When it did, it was with Redbreast 12 Year Old that they made the initial shove. Yet it was not until relatively modern times, albeit still under Crockett’s tenure, that the same Cork County distillery that has Jameson as its bread and butter committed to pushing single pot still whiskey. When Barry Crockett retired as Master Distiller for Irish Distillers in 2013 after 47 years with the company, his principal legacy was preserving the distinctly Irish style of pot still whiskey.

Rad Power’s website lists the Bikeologist Mobile Bicycle Repair and Upcycles as options for people who want to get help in-person. There are several stores in Portland that Rad Power owners have said will service their bikes. This has meant some angry customers leaving one-star Yelp reviews for the eBike Store, which never claimed to be a Rad Power retailer or service shop in the first place. Schnell said he has had trouble getting ahold of people from Rad Power when he has questions about their bikes, so the shop is limited in what it can do to help people who run into problems with them. Schnell said he thinks it’s worth the cost for a better quality bike that you can get serviced locally, but he understands why people are hesitant to pay that much for a bike. The least expensive bike sold at the eBike store is $2500 – twice as much as what the RadMission usually costs, and five times as much as its sale price. “I have no problem with the company,” Schnell told me. Andrew Schnell, a sales employee at the bike shop, says he thinks they’ve been able to hone in on an important market of people who want functional, non-luxury electric bikes at an affordable price.īut the downside to Rad Power’s business model is that customers have to figure a lot out by themselves. (According to Rad Power’s website, local mobile bike repair service Velofix is still available to help.) This has left some bike shops in a lurch.Įmployees at the The eBike Store in the Piedmont Neighborhood express skepticism about direct-to-consumer electric bike companies like Rad Power. They used to operate a mobile repair service in some other cities, including Portland, so people could get help directly from Rad Power, but they cancelled that program a few months before the big sale. Rad Power is based out of Seattle, and they have brick-and-mortar service centers in some other cities in the United States and Canada (but not in Portland). The popularity of such programs in places like Colorado has shown that people are interested in buying e-bikes at reduced rates and once they have the bikes, they often become game-changers for reducing their car use.īut Dagny’s experience made me wonder if there are more people who have had trouble with their new Rad Power bikes and how local bike shops are dealing with it. Some e-bike advocates saw the success of this sale as an indication that there’s a demand for electric bikes that should be met with more rebate programs. One particularly exciting anecdote was from someone who said that the person who delivered their bike was so inspired by all the boxes of bikes he was delivering that he decided to get one for himself. On my own Twitter feed, I heard dozens of accounts of people buying their first electric bikes because of this sale. The e-bike company’s recent sale was very popular – turns out, $500 e-bikes sell like hotcakes. Right now, the bike is sitting in our basement waiting for someone to figure out what went wrong and get it back in commission.ĭagny isn’t the only person who just bought a Rad Power bike. (No, it wasn’t dead.) Eventually, we got it going again, but only briefly before it puttered out once more and she had to ride to back without any electric assistance or lights. Dagny and I were riding with a group of other people on bikes deep in the north Portland peninsula this past weekend when all the sudden, the lights on her bike turned off and the pedal-assist stopped working. When the bike came, Dagny put it together and charged it up, excited to hit the bike path.īut she’d only had it for a few days when the honeymoon period ended. My roommate and friend Dagny Daniel was in the market for an electric bike, and when she saw Rad Power Bikes was selling their entry-level e-bike for a $500 ($700 lower than its usual price), she jumped at the opportunity to buy it. It’ll all get sorted out eventually, but there will be a lot of heartbreak in the process.” – Andrew Schnell, The eBike Store Dagny and her e-bike during the halcyon days. Reports, news, pics, videos, discussions and documentation from a studded world. Authors such as Salthouse argue that the slowing found in normal aging produces a global effect on cognition, so that the impairment captured when performing tasks related to other cognitive domains is better explained by this slowness rather than by a real malfunction in these other domains. However, it still remains unclear to what extent this slower processing speed accounts for the impairment of other cognitive functions in aging. With the present work we aim to highlight the role some factors such as education and gender may play in helping to explain the variability found in normal aging cognition.Ī decreased cognitive processing speed in old age is currently a widely accepted finding usually related to the changes in the brain white matter that take place in the aging process. Given this situation, we think that it is necessary to extract clear concepts from the current state of knowledge about age-related cognitive changes, regardless of the methodological approach followed by different researchers. The methodological heterogeneity described so far and the significant variability in available results in the study of cognitive aging creates a confusing scenario for beginners in the aging field. Other studies focus on the analysis of differential patterns of impairment throughout modalities within cognitive functions like verbal vs. , who explored how sex and educational level influence the cognitive performance of elderly individuals from the MAAS longitudinal project. Partial data reports based on cohort comparison from ongoing longitudinal projects are frequently found in these works. These works usually involve the assessment of several cognitive functions using neuropsychological tests or tasks and batteries, i.e., tests extensively linked to particular neural system functioning. On the other hand, there are other studies that seem to come from a clinical neuropsychology perspective. These works are usually framed in some of the existing cognitive theories about normal aging such as the Processing Speed Theory, models of Limited Resources or the Effort Hypothesis, and their aim often focuses on refuting any of these theories as a suitable explanation for the cognitive changes that take place in the aging process. working memory) and its interaction with another broader cognitive function (e.g. On the one hand, there are some studies that seem to follow more experimental paradigms, usually with greater interest in the dissection and detailed analysis of different levels of processing of a particular cognitive function (e.g. On a second level, a deeper review of the cross-sectional literature reveals that those works with a psychological background could be also subdivided into two main groups. The conclusions drawn from cross-sectional and longitudinal studies are often divergent as the former tend to show greater effects of aging on cognition. Cross-sectional studies, which are the most common, have to deal with cohort effects while longitudinal research involves elevated costs, learning effects, etc. Each of these approaches has different advantages and disadvantages. In this sense, the study of cognitive aging can be addressed by a longitudinal or a cross-sectional approach. At first glance this literature could be coarsely classified on the basis of the methodological design used in the studies. Regarding the study of age-related cognitive changes a lot of effort has been dedicated to the study of age-related cognitive changes over the last century, and this has resulted in an enormous amount of published material. People experience both physical and cognitive changes as their age advances. We conclude it seems to be enough evidence about the influence of certain modulating factors such as benefit from schooling and gender on cognitive aging, and not taking these factors into account when studying age-related cognitive changes contributes to the scarce agreement found in available results.Īging, Cognition, Neuropsychology, Education, Gender In this sense, a specific and differential pattern of impairment seems to be present in most cognitive domains, which highlights the existence of a great intra-domain variability in terms of impairment. The main aim of the present article is to extract a clear depiction of the current state of knowledge about age-related cognitive changes regardless of the methodological approach followed by researchers. The methodological heterogeneity observed in the aging field can significantly contribute to this observed variability, which creates a confusing scenario for beginners in this topic. The study of age-related cognitive changes over the last years reveals a considerable variability in available results. The Places labels show the contents of folders on your hard drives. Has creeping stems of approximately 4" (10 cm) long which should be encouraged to spread to avoid growing too tall.Red creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum 'Coccineus') has pink flowers. White creeping thyme (Thymus paocos 'Albiflorus') has white flowers and grows 1 to 2 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Walking on should be avoided when the ground beneath is laying very wet. Spicy orange creeping thyme (Thymus 'Spicy Orange') has pink flowers and grows 2 to 4 inches tall it is hardy in zones 5 to 9.Will happily take moderate foot traffic - but would not be suitable for excessive use by boisterous young children or pets. Ensure weed growth is kept under control until the lawn is well established.Plant 6" x 6" (15 x 15 cm) apart - that's 36 plants per square metre to metric people (or you can divide up our chunky plug plants and grow on in small pots before planting out).Creeping thyme can get leggy and woody so a light mowing once with the mower blades will give it a little rejuvenation. Thymes grow best in soil with a neutral to alkaline pH. Doesn’t Require Mowing Who would’ve thought that a lawn doesn’t require mowing Well, surprisingly, you can bid adieu to mow a creepy thyme law, and even if you have to, it’s only once a year. Prefers a well drained soil, and most certainly should not be planted in waterlogged conditions. Grow creeping thyme in full sun and well-drained soil in a variety of sites including rockeries, raised beds, border edges, window boxes, living walls, green roofs, and shallow pots.Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects. Although it appears delicate, this thyme adapts well to a range of well-draining environments and even tolerates light foot traffic. Thriving in full sun and drier soils, an established thyme lawn will always fare better than conventional grass in times of drought and needing just a couple of trims a year it is also less labour-intensive to keep tidy! Red creeping thyme ( Thymus praecox ‘Coccineus’) is a drought-tolerant, sun-loving, herbaceous perennial belonging to the mint ( Lamiaceae) family. In midsummer, delicate pretty pink flowers dot the surface, making the lawn all the prettier. You dont have to mow it and from mid-May to mid-June the Thyme is in full bloom. In the Edwardian era they were very popular – and rightly so, as they make a really lovely lush green 'carpet' of foliage which releases its sweet thyme aroma when crushed underfoot. One of the biggest benefits of a Thyme lawn is that it is low-maintenance. Thyme lawns are seldom seen these days which is a shame. Also known as wild thyme or Breckland thyme. Use authenticator apps for 2FA or passwordless access when available. The world has gotten sophisticated enough that it's impossible to remember your fully-random and unique-per-account passwords (be they codes or phrases). Compare those to random characters: log₂(94²¹) = 137. Compare that to random lowercase letters: log₂(26²¹) = 98. Sure, your musical preference is 21 characters, but even if we assume it's random and not known to Google, it's four words with some punctuation thrown in: log₂(100000⁴×32²) = 76. Don't be fooled by the impressive length of a passphrase. That's on the weaker side, and again: a passphrase that is a sentence is not secure. I calculated a word is worth 2.5 characters, so for equivalent entropy to a passcode with 10 random characters, log₂(94¹⁰) = 65, you'd need a passphrase with 4 random words, log₂(100000⁴) = 66. It's okay to generate several phrases and pick one that you can make a creative story around. You cannot "make up" a random phrase without assistance (ideally using a generator), only one that seems random. is more unique, but it's arbitrary, not random. Passwords must actually be random ( not arbitrary! not obscure! a pseudorandom number generator is okay), by characters (for passcodes) or by words (for passphrases). □ If a Google query for your password (quoted & de-0bfuscated) might get hits, it is weak. There are 94⁸ possible eight-character passwords (60 quintillion, entropy = 52), yet requiring a lower, upper, number, and special reduce that to 26×26×10×32×94⁴ (16 trillion, entropy = 43). It prevents lazy and easily-guessed passwords like aaaaaaaaaa by removing them from the possible password list. Don't try to be "clever"- Kaspersky's attempt at this ended in failure they made assumptions about the attack order that ended up creating much weaker passwords.įorcing users to add complexity to the characters in their passwords forces attackers to increase the complexity of their brute-force attacks, though it actually weakens the overall entropy. You may get lucky and be able to hide behind some obscurity, which is certainly worthwhile, but it must not factor into your math. #^Afx375Zq will take a good amount longer because it mixes four classes of characters and only uses three lowercase letters.Īlways assume attackers know your scheme. I have such a dictionary, so I could start with Anything0! through Zzzombie9~, then progress to the non-word combinations of Aaaaaaaa0! through Zzzzzzzz9~ before different variations.Įnsuring your password is more complex than the minimally permissible code gives you a slight advantage #aaaaaaaaa should take a few minutes longer to crack as aaaaaaaaaa. A code like aaaaaaaaaa must be assumed to have a scheme of "ten letters" and is therefore trivially cracked compared to the scheme we must assume from #^Afx375Zq.Īttackers prioritize the simplest arrangement that meets the password scheme: start with a capital letter, end with a number and then punctuation, fill the middle with the minimum lowercase letters, starting with words as sorted by frequency. While Facebook has large character limits, we recommend keeping your Facebook posts to at most 250 characters. The strength of a password is determined by its scheme.
